Adding Sites to Your Bookmarks or Favorites List

There are several ways to add Web sites to your Netscape Navigator bookmarks or Microsoft Internet Explorer favorites list:
  • Bookmarking a visited page: This is the most common method.
  • Bookmarking a link (without visiting the page): Right-click (Windows) or click and hold (Macintosh) a link to bookmark its URL without visiting the page it points to.
  • Bookmarking manually: Netscape Navigator and the Macintosh version of Internet Explorer let you manually enter the URLs of your favorite pages.
  • Filing bookmarks: Netscape Navigator for Windows users can use the browser's File Bookmark function to save new bookmarks in specific sections of the Bookmarks menu.

Bookmarking a visited page
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer may use different names for your list of favorite pages, but the process of adding the current page is almost identical.

  1. Go to the site you want to add to your bookmarks or favorites list.
  2. Press Ctrl-D (Windows) or Command-D (Macintosh) to save the page's URL. Navigator users can also click the Bookmarks menu and select Add Bookmark. Internet Explorer users can click Favorites and select Add to Favorites.

Bookmarking a link (without visiting the page)
You can also bookmark pages without visiting them. To do this, you must find a link that points to the page you want to bookmark.

  1. Right-click (Windows) or click and hold the link you want to bookmark. This opens a pop-up window containing several options.
  2. If you use Netscape Navigator, bookmark the link by choosing Add Bookmark (Windows) or Add Bookmark for this Link (Macintosh) from the pop-up menu.
  3. If you use Internet Explorer, bookmark the link by choosing Add to Favorites (Windows) or Add Link to Favorites (Macintosh) from the pop-up menu.

Filing bookmarks and favorites with Windows browsers
When you bookmark a site, its name usually appears at the bottom of your Bookmarks or Favorites menu. This can be a bit confusing, since a long list of sites can make it hard to find the one you want. Windows browsers help you organize your bookmarks by letting you file new bookmarks into folders inside your bookmarks or favorites list. (Learn how to set up folders inside your bookmarks or favorites.) To save sites in specific locations, follow the directions for your browser.

Netscape Navigator for Windows

  1. Go to the site you want to bookmark.
  2. Click the Bookmarks toolbar item. This opens a pop-up menu that contains your bookmarks and bookmark controls.
  3. Choose File Bookmark. This opens a second pop-up menu that contains a list of folders inside your bookmarks.
  4. Select the folder where you want to save the bookmark and click your mouse button. The bookmark will be saved inside this folder.

Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows

  1. Go to the site you want to bookmark.
  2. Choose Add to Favorites from the Favorites menu.
  3. On the Add Favorite dialog box, click the Create In button.
  4. Select the folder where you want to save the favorite and press OK. The favorite will be saved inside this folder.
