Organizing Your Bookmarks and Favorites

Your collection of bookmarks or favorites can lose its value if you don't keep them organized. Here are some tips for keeping your bookmarks in order with folders, manual sorting, subfolders.

Create folders for your bookmarks
The first step in controlling your bookmarks is to organize them in folders corresponding to your interests (e.g., politics, fashion, news, sports). To create folders for your bookmarks, follow the directions for your browser.

Netscape Navigator for Windows
  1. Click the Bookmarks button on the toolbar and select Edit Bookmarks.
  2. Select New Folder from the File menu. A dialog box will appear allowing you to name the folder.
  3. Type in the name you want to use (Sports or Music, for example) and press OK.

Netscape Navigator for Macintosh

  1. Click on the Navigator icon (the small yellow ship's wheel) on your menu bar and select Bookmarks.
  2. Choose New Folder from the File menu.
  3. Type a name the folder (Sports or Music, for example) and press the Return key.

Internet Explorer for Windows

  1. Select Organize Favorites from the Favorites menu. This opens a standard Windows folder directory.
  2. Click the small folder-creation button (it looks like a folder with a star or sparkle on it).
  3. Type a name for the folder (Sports or Music, for example) and press OK.

Internet Explorer for Macintosh

  1. Select New Folder from the Favorites menu.
  2. Type the name of your new folder (Sports or Music, for example).
  3. Press Return.

Sorting bookmarks and favorites
Navigator and Internet Explorer let you sort your bookmarks by dragging them into the new folders you've created. To learn how to sort bookmarks, follow the directions for your browser.

Netscape Navigator for Windows
  1. Click on the Communicator menu and select Bookmarks. This opens a pop-up menu containing your bookmarks and bookmark controls.
  2. Select Edit Bookmarks from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on a bookmark's icon and drag it into the folder you want to store it in.
  4. To see the contents of a folder, click the + next to its icon.
  5. When you're done sorting your bookmarks, click the Bookmarks window close box.

Netscape Navigator for Macintosh

  1. Click on the Navigator icon (the small yellow ship's wheel) on your menu bar and select Bookmarks.
  2. Click on a bookmark's icon and drag it into the folder you want to store it in.
  3. To see the contents of a folder, click the triangle next to its icon. When the triangle is pointing down, the folder is open and its contents are displayed.
  4. When you're done sorting your bookmarks, click the Bookmarks window close box.

Internet Explorer for Windows

  1. Click the Favorites button on your browser window toolbar. This opens your Favorites window.
  2. Click on a favorite site's name and drag it into the folder you want to store it in.
  3. To see the contents of a folder, click to the right of the folder's name. The contents of the folder will appear.
  4. When you're done sorting your favorites, click the Favorites window close box.

Internet Explorer for Macintosh

  1. Choose Open Favorites from the Favorites menu.
  2. Click on a favorite site's name and drag it into the folder you want to store it in.
  3. To see the contents of a folder, click the triangle next to its icon. When the triangle is pointing down, the folder is open and its contents are displayed.
  4. When you're done sorting your favorites, click the Favorites window close box.

Folders within folders
You can also drag entire folders into other folders. This is how you create subcategories in your bookmarks and favorites. For example, to organize a collection of sports-related links, you could create three separate folders named Basketball, Football, and Baseball. Then, after dragging all your sports bookmarks into their appropriate folders, you could create a fourth folder named Sports and drag the first three folders into it.

Automatically sort your bookmarks and favorites
Sorting your bookmarks and favorites into folders isn't the only way to organize them. Some browsers can also alphabetize your bookmarks or sort them by their location, creation date, or other criteria. To learn how to use your browser's automatic organization tools, follow the directions for your browser.

Netscape Navigator for Windows
  1. Select Edit Bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu.
  2. In the window that appears, click the View menu.
  3. Select By Name, By Location, By Created On, or By Last Visited to automatically sort your bookmarks.
  4. Click the window's close box when you are finished.

Internet Explorer for Macintosh

  1. Select Open Favorites from the Favorites menu.
  2. To sort by name, click the Name bar at the top of the Favorites window.
  3. To sort by URL, click the Address bar at the top of the Favorites window.
  4. Click the window's close box when you are finished.
