Animated Browser Logos
Sometimes, when you click on a link, it seems as if nothing is happening. If you're unsure, look in the upper-right
corner of the browser, for the logo of the Netscape or Microsoft browser. If the
logo is animated (spinning or streaming), that means that the browser got your request for a new page and is out looking
for it. It may take some time to find the page because your browser has to go out across the Web (perhaps around the world)
looking for the page specified by the link.
Page Loading Variables
Just as it does on freeways and in cities, Internet traffic can slow down the progress of your travels. And once the page
has been found, your browser needs to download the page to your computer so your browser can display it.
How long it takes to download a page varies with the speed of your modem, the speed of your computer, the amount of traffic
on the Internet, and the size of the page. Large pages, especially pages filled with graphics, can take a while to download
fully.
The Browser Status Bar
You can tell at what stage in the download process your browser is in by looking at the "status bar" at the bottom-left of
the screen. There, you'll see messages like "Connect: Contacting host," "Transferring," or "Reading file." While the page
is being downloaded, a progress report may also appear, telling you what percent of the page has loaded (e.g., "23% of 16k").
