Hi! My name is Susie Survivor. Sometimes things happen to us that could be a threat to our lives or our property. I'm a survivor, and I want you to be, too. That's why I assist the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency in helping you be better prepared to deal with an emergency. Knowing what to do and when to do it could make all the difference.
So let's start at the beginning. Just what is emergency management, anyway?
Emergency management is a systematic, organized approach to analyzing, planning, making decisions, and assigning resources to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from all hazards, manmade or natural. The goal of emergency management is to save lives, prevent injuries, and protect property and the environment if an emergency occurs.
The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency (FCEMA) handles the emergency management of the unincorporated areas of the county and helps municipalities in their emergency management activities when asked. During a major emergency or disaster, the FCEMA coordinates private and public sector resources to focus efforts on response and recovery. Should local and county resources and capabilities be exhausted, the FCEMA asks for assistance from state and federal emergency management organizations. In the recovery stage of a major disaster, the FCEMA will try to get Franklin County included in state and federal executive disaster declarations. This will help provide relief and spur recovery.

Hazardous Materials
It almost seems like nature is getting back at us by putting all these hazards in our way. But we also do it to ourselves. I'm talking about chemical hazards.
There's absolutely no way you can get away from the presence of some sort of chemical in today's industrialized society. Our cars run on them, we use them in manufacturing, we clean with them, and so forth. They're everywhere! And some of them, like chlorine or ammonia, can be pretty nasty! But the Franklin County community is not defenseless. The Franklin County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), aided by county emergency response organizations and businesses who use various chemicals, has developed a hazardous materials response plan to guide actions in response to a spill.
Below are several topics relating to hazardous materials that you should be aware of. You'll find some history and background on hazardous materials legislation in addition to some tips you may one day find really helpful.
